Except, of course, I haven\u2019t really, because I\u2019ve been active all that time on Facebook, Twitter (a bit), and latterly Instagram. Micro-blogging, I think they call this (well, they would, wouldn\u2019t they?). Anyway, whilst trying to blog every day seems terribly 2004 these days, I don\u2019t want to let it go entirely. Maybe once a fortnight is the more twentyteenage thing to do. I won\u2019t bother with an exhaustive list, so I\u2019ll just note that I have a new agent in Kirsty McLachlan at (David Godwin Associates); I have a novel out on submission (though no news yet); the third Dan book is complete and Illustrated (except for the cover), and I am now very much engaged with the art for my joint venture with Marcus Sedgwick \u2013 a comic book called <i>Scarlett Hart and the Tentacles of Terror<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1735\" src=\"http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_008_AB.jpeg\" alt=\"Scarlett Hart and the Tentacles of Terror\" width=\"1524\" height=\"1488\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_008_AB.jpeg 1524w, http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_008_AB-300x293.jpeg 300w, http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_008_AB-1024x1000.jpeg 1024w, http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_008_AB-768x750.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1524px) 100vw, 1524px\" \/>Scarlett Hart is a demanding project for me. Not only is it a mountain of sketching, it also involves elements of graphic design I\u2019m not used to. Designing the layout of each page, distributing the action and dialogue evenly across the spread, and keeping the characterisation consistent is just the start of it. Then it has to be inked before being scanned into Photoshop for colouring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1856\" src=\"http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_sketch_011a.jpg\" alt=\"Scarlett Hart sketches thomas taylor\" width=\"1522\" height=\"753\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_sketch_011a.jpg 1522w, http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_sketch_011a-300x148.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_sketch_011a-1024x507.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_sketch_011a-768x380.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1522px) 100vw, 1522px\" \/>I thought I knew how to use Photoshop. I didn\u2019t. There are functions within functions, and a whole level of cogs and sprockets beyond that. With a project of this scale, even the simplest shortcut can save hours overall. I\u2019ve had help with this, not least from illustrator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnkellyillustration.com\/\">John Kelly<\/a> (thanks again, John!).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1857\" src=\"http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_sketch_011c.jpg\" alt=\"Scarlett Hart sketches Thomas Taylor\" width=\"1505\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_sketch_011c.jpg 1505w, http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_sketch_011c-300x44.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_sketch_011c-1024x151.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk\/devblock\/ttaylor111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SH_sketch_011c-768x113.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1505px) 100vw, 1505px\" \/>Scarlett hunts monsters in a steampunkish1920s world that\u2019s somewhere between the New England of Lovecraft and the folklore of East Anglia. A third point on the compass is the drawing board of Herg\u00e9, but mostly as a guide for tone. All those hours of furtive pencilling also need to be fuelled by a constant stream of suitable mood music, but fortunately the internet is full of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fBGSJ3sbivI\">weird and wonderful stuff<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So there you are, I\u2019ve written a blog post! Now I just need to keep it up.
